Nikon D90 vs Olympus E3 Iso 3200 Shots.

Comparison shots for Olympus E3 and Nikon D90 at iso3200. Noise reduction for both is set to high.

The intention of this test is not to flame ..is just merely for comparison purpose only..

Cannot see the advantages of the D90 other than the slightly greater detail. If anything, the noise in D90 looks more blotchy than the E-3, which is difficult to remove in PP.

I suggest using E3 with NF Off and removing the noise with Noiseware.

On-camera noise removal is not very effective and you lose details.

Maybe try to compare the cameras without noise filtering.

I second the suggestion of using noise filter on Low on the E-3, and dealing with noise later.

Regarding the two above photos, they both have too much noise... but the E-3 one is also underexposed by about 1 stop.

In practice, I think the E-3 above ISO 1250 is not that great, I have ISO 1250 set as the ISO AUTO limit.

in fact i dont use my E3 at above iso800.. The comparison is just to show others that the grass is not alwasy greener over there..and if you think getting a D90 will let you shoot at iso3200 then better look somewhere else...

I'd like to see the comparison with my Canon 50D too :)

I found that Nikon colour too warm.. Olympus in this case looks just right.. so +1 point for Olympus here.. :)

Agree. The colour cast on the D90 image looks a bit too warm and the image does appear to have far more chroma blotching.

Disappointing, since ISO 3200 isn't even a boost setting on the D90 and it sports a newer generation image sensor and image processing engine when compared to the D300, E-3, and 40D!

It would be interesting to compare this D90 image with an E-30 image too.

BTW: There is some banding evident across the sky in the E-3 image.

Will Olympus correct this banding at high ISOs with a firmware upgrade soon?

There is about a stop of difference in actual exposure, so the comparison isn't really fair. For an image hanging up on my wall I'd prefer the nikon since it's correctly exposed. To get the same exposure, the nikon could shoot at ISO 1600 and be nearly grainless. Since the olympus' sensor has less sensitivity at equal shutter and aperture, it would have to shoot at ISO 6400 to equal exposure, which would cause far more noise.

A test like this doesn't make a whole lot of sense since normally take this shot on a tripod. For handheld you'd me able to shoot at twice the shutterspeed on the nikon because of it's increased sensitivity.

jpegs from both cameras are sub par. Even so, a better comparison would be of a properly white balanced scene. Why not compare similar angles of view too? The wider angle of view is going to appear to have finer detail. This is just all sorts of wrong. I have a d300 and a d90, and indeed the grass is a lot greener here. Even at 6400.

The purpose of this test is to put the camera to real world test.. in real world i just take the slr and snap..and this is the actual result i get.. so dont get upset if the iso performance sucks..just live with it..

are you telling me the high iso performance only good in certain condition under certain wb?

I agree with Micah, the grass is greener with Nikon (in regards to high ISO's), don't kid yourself Lucifer.

further proving that the grass is greener with Nikon, lets see what a former e-3 owner has to say?:

The E3 owner need to do commercial work and thus require a full frame to do that D700 to be precise... D700 and D90 is way way diff my fren...the price is also diff...

omg why can u just read other ppl statement properly.,. and pls stop comparing a FF with E3... I did not compare my E3 with nikon point n shoot..or did i?

And shots like this always prove that i dont need a FF to be a photographer..
